Model aircraft flying has been the most popular and accessible air sport in the UK since the 1920s.
The British Model Flying Association (BMFA), was founded in 1922 as the Society of Model Aeronautical Engineers (SMAE) and is delegated by the Royal Aero Club and Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) for the control, regulation and administration of all aspects of recreational and competitive model flying in the UK (British Model Flying Association is the trading name of the Society of Model Aeronautical Engineers).
The BMFA consists of over 35,000 members and over 800 affiliated clubs nationwide and is by far the largest air-sports body within the Royal Aero Club, the Association currently has a head office and administrative centre located in Leicester.
The BMFA selects and supports World and European Championship teams that represent the UK and have achieved many top awards in a wide variety of model competition classes over many years. BMFA members have a long history of making significant innovations and major contributions to the sport worldwide, as well as in the development of full-size aviation.
The stated aims of the Association are "the promotion, protection, organisation and encouragement of model aircraft building, flying and development in all its aspects”.
This ethos spans all model flying from the grass roots sport flyer to the international competitor.
Model flying is officially recognised as a sport by Sport England.
